Stealing a Nation is a 2004 Granada Television documentary written and directed by John Pilger, produced and directed by Christopher Martin and with reconstruction footage directed by Sean Crotty. The documentary is about the expulsion of Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago, chiefly from Diego Garcia Island, forcibly removed by the British government between 1967 and 1973 to Mauritius, 1,000 miles away, so that the island could be used as an American and British airbase.
Diego Garcia, the militarised island in the middle of the Indian Ocean has gained a fair bit of attention this year since it was claimed that the missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370 could have landed there. The grim history of the island was revealed in the 2009 book, 'The Island Of Shame'. The United Kingdom may lose a vote at the United Nations over the future of the Indian Ocean archipelago known as the Chagos Islands. The islands were deliberately separated from Mauritius prior to independence in the 1960s. That was in order to lease the largest island -- Diego Garcia -- to the U.S. military. The UN is expected to vote on the matter later on Thursday. CGTN's Nick Harper has more from New York. I had to go to a small island in the Indian Ocean named Diego Garcia for work. I was able to do a lot of cool things and meet some awesome people. But as everything does, the trip came to an end. STEALING A NATION (John Pilger, 2004) is an extraordinary film about the plight of people of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean - secretly and brutally expelled from their homeland by British governments in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to make way for an American military base. The base, on the main island of Diego Garcia, was a launch pad for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Stealing a Nation has won both the Royal Television Society's top award as Britain's best documentary in 2004-5, and a 'Chris Award' at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival. A brochure of the film is available at www.bullfrogfilms.com/guides/stealguide.pdf. On April 8, 2008, the Chagos Islanders have launched a national Campaign for Resettlement of their islands - go to www.letthemreturn.com...
Too many pictures for a 5 min video but it's hard to decide which ones to leave out.
'Who is Diego Garcia?' Diego Garcia - a remote paradise island. A population expelled. A massive American military base. And, part of Britain. The story of Diego Garcia, part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, is little known by many people. We look at public awareness of Diego Garcia, how it came to stay in the hands of Britain, how the native population was expelled and why this all happened.
